IBM and Silecs engage in technical exchange and co-author paper demonstrating effects of high refractive index lightguide material for CMOS image sensors.

ESPOO, Finland, July 30, 2009—Silecs Oy is today releasing a paper co-authored with IBM Microelectronics demonstrating the impact high refractive index (RI) lightguide material on CMOS Image Sensor performance.

Silecs Oy, a manufacturer of specialty chemicals and coating materials for the semiconductor industry; provides  a wide range of products that are used in advanced semiconductor packaging technology, flat panel televisions, semiconductor logic and memory devices , digital cameras, solar cells and LED light applications.

Originally released by IBM at the 2009 International Image Sensor Workshop in Bergen, Norway; the paper highlights the impact of lightguide materials on quantum efficiency and light response angle.

IBM and Silecs initiated cooperation in 2007 in an effort to optimize the performance of Image Sensors with a pixel size less than 2.2um. IBM developed the image sensor design and process technology in parallel with Silecs’s development of its advanced SC platform products to enhance sensor performance (SC 400 and SC 800, with RI’s of 1.65 and 1.85 at 633nm wavelength range). The platform is based on company’s proprietary organo-siloxane technology based polymer materials.

The two materials evaluated, Silecs SC400 and SC800 are fully commercialized and ready for shipment to qualified image sensor manufacturers.

“We are very excited about the results and look forward to enabling CMOS sensor manufacturers to provide advanced high performance devices. We believe our products establish a new technology benchmark for dielectric lightguide materials” said Billy McLaughlin, VP of Engineering at Silecs.

Silecs Oy is an innovator of enabling materials used in the microelectronics industry, particularly for semiconductor, flat panel display manufacturing and solar cell applications. Founded in 2001, Silecs has its headquarters in Espoo, Finland, together with the company's innovation center, with research, development and a world-class ISO 9001 and ISO 14000 certified manufacturing operation. Silecs also provides local and regional customer support through an extensive global network. www.silecs.com
